I am grateful for this opportunity to seek your support as I run for re-election to the California Senate.

I'm proud of my record over a decade of service. I have always stood firm for our values and ideals. But I also believe that people of good will can and must come together to find sensible solutions to our problems.

I must confess that this is the most challenging time that I have ever experienced in Sacramento. The recession has done enormous harm to our state, and needless partisan bickering has made things worse.

We live in a time of growing inequality that threatens the American dream. Californians should be doing everything in our power to shore up the foundations of equal opportunity in a just society. Instead, on every front, we are witnessing a decline in the services that made this the golden state.

Together, we must find a way to move forward, repair the damage and reclaim California's future. That's why I am running for re-election. I am more determined than ever to be part of solving our most pressing problems: rebuilding our economy; strengthening our schools; protecting our environment; and creating good jobs here at home that provide hope and security for raising a family.

I will work tirelessly to achieve those goals, and I believe I have the experience we need to achieve success. Nothing worth doing comes easily. So even in this era of partisan gridlock, we must continue the hard work of seeking common ground. That's a task I've been preparing for my entire working life -- first as a teacher and a school volunteer; then as a mayor and city council member; and, finally, as your representative in the Legislature.

Every day my goal is to be worthy of your confidence and your trust. So I would be honored to have your support in my re-election campaign.
